Local and area briefs

From Staff reports

— PRYOR — Morgan Tarrance returned from an injury and pitched Tahlequah to a 7-4 victory against Pryor on Monday afternoon. The junior hurler gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk, and she also threw 72 of her 104 pitches for strikes.

“Morgan looked good after nine days out. She pitched ahead all day,” said Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud, whose club improved to 22-1 overall and 6-0 in District 5A-3 play.

Tahlequah broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with four runs. Kortney Dry had a go-ahead, two-single that scored Randee O’Donnell and Kirsten Chase. Lainey Wallace followed with a two-run single of her own that plated Dry and Lindsay Wade.

“We had several good (at-bats) that inning,” Cloud said of the fifth frame.

Dry, who went two for three on the day, added some insurance in the seventh inning with a run-scoring single.

Tahlequah finished with 12 hits against Pryor pitcher Hunter Gilstrap.

“I thought we swung it well today,” Cloud said. “We’re starting to turn the corner at the plate, and I think we’ve got a chance if we continue to improve.”

Tahlequah continues in 5A-3 play today against Skiatook.

Hulbert softball blanks Gore

GORE — Lauren Reagan went two for two and drove in two runs as Hulbert shut out Gore, 7-0, on the road on Monday. Tina Buford and Jessica Rhodes also had two hits for the Lady Riders, who collected nine hits as a team.

Katlyn Sewell logged a complete-game shutout for Hulbert, allowing only three hits. She also recorded eight strikeouts.

Hulbert took control in a five-run second inning. Dixie Capps grounded into a fielders’ choice to plate Hulbert’s first run, and Ashlyn Riley and Reagan both followed with run-scoring hits — Reagan’s being a two-run double to center field.

Hulbert is now 5-8 and plays at Chouteau on Thursday.
