SHS girls win regional crown

Kayla Davis and the Class 3A No. 2 Sequoyah girls cross country edged out Adair for a regional title on Saturday afternoon in Henryetta.

Davis finished second overall, recording a time of 12:40 in the two-mile race. Davis was 39 seconds off the winning pace set by Henryetta’s Daisy Vanmeter.

Davis wasn’t the only Sequoyah runner in the top 10. She was joined by Kyla Holmes and Taylor Henry. Holmes (12:46) was fourth while Taylor Henry (13:15) came in ninth.

Julia Spottedbird (14:07) and Diana Garay rounded out the Lady Indians’ scoring in 24th and 32nd, respectively.

Sequoyah won the regional crown with 61 points, which was 27 better than Adair. Henryetta (92), Keys (106) and Holdenville (120) rounded out the top five.

All five teams will compete against 10 other clubs for the Class 3A state championship on Saturday at Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech in Shawnee.

Leading the way for Keys at the regional meet was Ali Andrews in 12th place at 13:24. McKenzie Garner was also in the top 20, holding down the 20th spot at 13:53.

As for the second-ranked Sequoyah boys, Terrance Nofire finished fourth overall to lead the Indians to a second-place showing at the 3A regional. Nofire concluded the 5K in 17:01.

Henryetta’s Colton Green came in first at 16:31 for the individual title.

Rounding out the rest of Sequoyah’s finishers were: Cayden Salazar (18:11) in seventh, Cody Christie (18:26) in eighth, Bill Buffalomeat (19:29) in 19th and Snow Eagle (19:42) in 21st.

Kansas won the team championship with 37 points. The Indians picked up 52 points and were followed by Henryetta (70), Eufaula (118) and Holdenville (133).
