Lady Tigers break through late, beat Poteau

POTEAU — Tahlequah’s hitters were no match for Poteau pitcher RaeLynn Caldwell on Tuesday. Well, until the final inning.

After Caldwell no-hit Tahlequah for 6 1/3 innings, the Lady Tigers’ Whitney Wright managed to slap a single to left with one out in the top half of the seventh inning. Wright was then erased on Randee O’Donnell’s ground out to second base.

It was down to Kirsten Chase to save the day for Tahlequah.

She didn’t disappoint.

The junior second baseman cranked a two-run home run to left field, giving the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead. Tahlequah would go on to record a victory by that very score.

“We hit-and-ran with Chase,” Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud said. “Then she hits it out.”

Caldwell had thoroughly dominated Tahlequah for six innings, recording 11 strikeouts while facing the minimum through six frames.

Tahlequah pitcher Lindsay Wade was just as tough, limiting Poteau to one run on one walk and two hit batters. The sophomore did not give up a hit to the Lady Pirates.

“Lindsay pitched great, and their pitcher was equally as good,” Cloud said. “We found a way to win today.”

Tahlequah returns home to take part in the Tahlequah/Northeastern State University tournament on Thursday.
