Tigers knock off Claremore

— CLAREMORE — Class 5A No. 14 Tahlequah did just enough to escape Claremore with a 45-33 dual victory over the Zebras on Thursday night.

Hestin Lamons, wrestling at 145 pounds, pulled off a 3-1 win over Caleb Hinds in overtime to lead the Tigers to their first dual victory over the season.

“It was the match of the night at 152,” Tahlequah coach James Rappe said. “It was a great match.”

Also posting wins for Tahlequah was Zech VanFleet (126), Paul Sargent (138), Mitch Sellers (145) and Colton Wright (195). All four won by fall. Chase Campbell (170) and Reese Davis (182) both won by forfeit for Tahlequah, who will take part in the Bristow dual tournament which starts today. In Bristow, Tahlequah will wrestle Mannford, Sulphur and Bristow on the first day of the tournament before bracket competition on Saturday.

In Salina, Keys and Sequoyah both wrestled Salina and Class 3A No. 8 Jay. Keys went 1-1 while Sequoyah went 0-2.

Keys’ victory was a 48-30 triumph over Salina. The Cougars took advantage of six forfeits on Salina’s part. Dylan Stanley was able to post a win by fall at 152 pounds for Keys.

“We looked OK, but not great,” Keys coach Travis Kirby said of his club’s win over Salina.

Against Jay, Keys lost 60-24. The Cougars fell in a 30-0 hole and never could come back. Brent Gladd (138), Stanley (145), John Haeberle (152) and Seth Fritts (170) all posted wins for the Cougars.

“Jay was a lot better than I expected,” Kirby said. “We made a few mistakes and they were quick to capitalize on them.”

As for Sequoyah, the Indians lost to Jay 60-12 and to Salina, 36-36 (on criteria).

Both Sequoyah and Keys will take part in the Border Brawl Invitational in Poteau today and on Saturday.
