It’s the usual suspects at the Class 6A state tournament this year. Well, sub Tecumseh in Jenks’ spot and it’s the same field as last year’s state tournament.

Then take those eight teams and send them to Shawnee — instead of the usual venue at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City — and you have your normal slowpitch softball state tournament slate ready to go for next week.

When play begins Tuesday at the Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee, Tahlequah will be making its 22nd straight appearance in the state tournament. The second-ranked Lady Tigers will take on No. 7 Tecumseh in the first round at 11:30 a.m.

The entire 6A tournament will be played on Field 2.

Joining Tahlequah (34-5) and Tecumseh in the fray will be Westmoore, Union, Muskogee, Moore, Broken Arrow and top-ranked Southmoore.

And just like any other year, the tournament is anybody’s to win. Just ask Tahlequah coach Matt Cloud.

“I really believe any of the eight could win it,” he said. “Just need to play good one day.”

Last season’s champion, Union will take on Westmoore on the same half of the bracket as Tahlequah and Tecumseh. The other four teams are on the top half of the bracket.

First-round games will begin at 10 a.m. and play right up until the semifinals at 4. The championship games of Classes 6A through 4A will be played at 7 p.m.

In the 5A field, No. 10 Sequoyah will challenge second-ranked Chandler at 1 p.m. on Field 3. Bethel, Henryetta, Purcell, Heavener, Cache and Muldrow will round out the rest of the field.

Sequoyah was ousted in last year’s state tournament in the first round by Cache, who went on to win the championship.
