Hulbert teams split at Kiefer tourney

KIEFER — Junior Tiffany Thompson scored 20 points to lead the Hulbert Lady Riders to a 44-26 victory over Class A Oaks Thursday at the Dale Calvert Invitational.

“We had already beaten them once,” Hulbert assistant coach Towanna Scott said. “I didn’t have any doubt that we wouldn’t come out and do what we were supposed to do.”

Hulbert defeated Oaks in Greenleaf Tournament final in December. Three of the Lady Warriors’ four losses have been to teams from larger schools.

With the win, Hulbert (11-5) will play Ripley in a 4 p.m. semifinal game Friday. Oaks (12-4) drops to the consolation bracket and will play Prue at 10 a.m.

In the game immediately after, the Hulbert Riders committed 22 turnovers en route to a 66-50 loss to the Class 3A Kellyville Ponies (1-10).

Kellyville junior John Sherwood scored 23 points, including 11 in the first quarter alone.

Two Hulbert players reached double digits, with freshman Mason Fielding scoring 12 points and junior Rico Wynn chipping in 11.

Hulbert (9-7) will play Drumright at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the consolation bracket. Kellyville advances to play Ripley in a 5:30 p.m. semifinal matchup.
