Bunch cards overall 232; Keys gets 12th

Local and state briefs

DUNCAN — Sequoyah’s Rylan Bunch shot a final-round 78 and finished the Class 3A state tournament with a 232 at the Duncan Golf and Tennis Club. Bunch’s teammate, Kyle Butler, finished the 54-hole event with a 300.

As a team, Keys fired a 381 in the final round and finished in last place. The Cougars finished the tournament with a 1,141. Shea Heble led Keys with a 245 after shooting a 78 on the final 18 holes. Kris Beres (285), Alex Thompson (323), Zach Rogers (299), Larry Caviness (312) rounded out the rest of Keys’ scores in the tournament.

THS tennis gets 4 to state

The Tahelquah tennis team qualified three of four spots in the state tournament on Monday.

At Class 5A regional tournament play, the Tigers were led by No. 1 singles player Conner Nelson, who came in third place after beating Claremore’s Caleb Cotner, 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.

Tahlequah’s No. 1 doubles team (Lars Gris/Hunter Manes) also came in third place.

The Tigers’ final qualifier was Leon Beck at No. 2 singles. Beck recorded a fourth-place showing at regionals.

Tahlequah will now advance to the 5A state tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday.

OSU’s Martin invited to USA Basketball U19 tryouts

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State Cowgirl Brittney Martin is one of 34 players invited to try out for the 2013 USA Basketball U19 World Championship team.

A 12-member team will be selected following the tryouts May 16-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The US team will try for its fifth consecutive gold medal when it plays in the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship from July 18-28 in Lithuania.

Martin is the first Cowgirl invited to a USA Basketball event since Andrea Riley was selected for the USA Basketball Women’s Select Team in 2010.

Martin will be a sophomore next season at OSU.

Kickoff time set for Oklahoma St-UT-San Antonio

STILLWATER — A morning kickoff has been scheduled for the Sept. 7 Oklahoma State at Texas-San Antonio game.

OSU officials say Conference USA has scheduled an 11 a.m. kickoff for the game in San Antonio. The game is to be broadcast by Fox Sports Net.

This will be the first-ever meeting between OSU and UTSA. The Roadrunners are coached by former Cowboys’ assistant Larry Coker.

Lady Tigers reach 4A finals

FORT GIBSON — The Fort Gibson girls soccer team will play for the Class 4A championship on Saturday after beating Piedmont 2-0 on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers will take on Verdigris on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the University of Tulsa.
