Ott takes over AD duties at Hulbert

He's still only working part time. Although, it's awfully hard to tell.

In addition to coaching the girls basketball team and teaching a health and fitness class, Rick Ott recently decided to take on athletic director duties at Hulbert High School.

Ott saw it as an opportunity to help lighten the load for Brad Ferguson, who had served as Hulbert's high school principal and athletic director during recent years.

"That was the main consideration," Ott said, "taking some off of Brad's plate and lightening his load a little bit. It's not going to be too overbearing."

With the education side in mind, Ott said Ferguson has enough to worry about these days.

"He's a principal and with all the testing these days, that's a plate full," Ott said.

Ott will be entering his second season as the Lady Riders' coach. During the 2012-2013 campaign, the Hulbert girls went 16-10 and won a district title before being eliminated from the postseason in the regional tournament in Mounds.

"I'm glad they think enough of me to give me the opportunity," Ott said of being named Hulbert's athletic director. "The coaches supported me, and I didn't actively pursue (the position)."

Ott did downplay his new endeavor, saying it's not being an athletic director at a larger school.

"Being an AD at Hulbert, isn't going to be like being an AD at Tahlequah," said Ott, who also mentioned that he served as an assistant athletic director during his years at Sequoyah.
