Tahlequah’s Nelson finishes 8th

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tahlequah No. 1 singles player Conner Nelson lost 6-1, 6-2, to Edison’s Jason Ly and finished eighth at the Class 5A state tennis tournament on Saturday.

Nelson, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, beat Duncan’s Sam Moffatt 6-1, 6-2, to begin the tournament but suffered a loss against Metro Christian’s Jackson Fine 7-5, 6-2, and dropped to the consolation bracket. After beating Grant Luthy of Deer Creek in straight sets, Nelson lost to Collinsville’s Williams Reynolds in an attempt to make the consolation finals. Nelson lost to Reynolds 6-1, 6-2.

Nelson was Tahlequah’s lone qualifier for the state tournament on the boys side.

Fine ended up winning the state championship after beating Nelson. Fine knocked off Oklahoma Christian School’s Reed Streller 6-3, 6-1, in the finals.
