Sequoyah to host volleyball regional

Sequoyah has hosted a regional tournament in volleyball before. Just not in its current gymnasium.

On Thursday, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association handed out Class 4A regional tournament assignments, and Sequoyah was one of eight schools selected to host.

“Obviously, we’re excited to get one,” Sequoyah coach Jay Herrin said of landing a hosting gig during the regional round of the playoffs.

“This was one of our goals at the beginning of the season. We set some early goals to win our tournament and possibly another tournament along the way, and we did that. We also wanted to be ranked in the top 10.

“We are very pleased and excited to have it. We haven’t had one at our place since 2005.”

Back then, the regional tournament was held in Sequoyah’s old gymnasium. This season, it will be in The Place Where They Play.

Joining Sequoyah in its regional will be Inola, Westville, Hulbert, Okay, Wagoner, Salina and Chouteau.

“Some teams in there are good enough to reach the state tournament if they play well,” Herrin said. “We feel like if we play to our potential, we feel like we can win it. We like our chances, but we respect everyone in there and won’t take anyone lightly.”

The Lady Indians, ranked fourth in Class 4A, beat Wagoner 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-12) on Thursday. Sequoyah will continue regular-season play on Monday at Claremore-Sequoyah.

“The girls are excited,” Herrin said of the regional tournament, “so it’ll be tough to keep them focused on these next couple of matches.”
