Indians roughed up in opener at Salina

SALINA — Junior outfielder Colton Burgess batted in five runs, including a two-run home run, to boost Salina past Sequoyah Monday, 16-5.

Burgess’ two-run shot closed a wild first inning, which saw the teams combine for 13 runs, nine hits, four extra-base hits and three errors.

“Home runs are accidents,” Burgess said. “I’m just trying to get the barrel on the ball and see how far it flies.”

Salina (2-2) fell into a 4-0 hole after a half-inning. Jeremiah Fixin, Elijah Tucker and Hunter Soap all batted in runs, and Fixin scored on a wild pitch.

Salina put the clamps on Sequoyah (0-1) after that, however, allowing just one run and plating 16 in the next four innings to earn a run-rule victory.

“Our hitting has been with us,” Burgess said. “We have hardly been taking batting practice at all. We’ve just been working on defense after Spiro, when we gave up 31 runs in two games. We’ve still got a ways to go.”

Cale Backward and Burgess hit back-to-back extra-base hits to lead off the bottom of the first. Bret Fite, Kyle Johnson and Bryce Kerns each singled in the inning, as did Coby Backward and Cale Backward.

The Backward cousins’ base-hits resulted in three RBIs before Burgess cleared the bases.

Fite earned the win on the mound and went 2-of-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and two RBIs. Cale Backward went 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a triple. Burgess was also one hit away from the cycle, lacking only a triple.

Logan Gardner earned a save, throwing two scoreless innings in relief of Fite. Chase Mellowbug had the defensive highlight of the day, ending the top of the fourth by handling a line drive and stepping on the bag for an unassisted double play.

Zach Parish went 2-for-3 for Sequoyah with a pair of singles. Tucker had a double.

Sequoyah added a run in the third inning on a wild pitch.
