Maverick Conference Tournament finals notebook

A breakdown of each of final matchups in the championship bracket.

— 106: Wagoner’s Travis Greer faced little resistance in a 15-1 victory. Greer was able to do whatever he wanted against Vian’s Anthony Chew — except pin him. Greer managed to keep Greer from bonus points — but not first place.

113: Tyson Hume avoided second place this weekend by winning a 10-4 decision over Jay’s Trestin January. Hume — named the  tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler of the lower weights — built his lead up to 9-1 before January scored a late takedown.

120: Donald Cannon never saw the third period during the tournament. However, with all of his wins by fall, he didn’t need to. Cannon capped a 4-0 weekend with a win by fall at 1:59 over Wagoner’s Tyler Johnson. Cannon was able to pin Johnson with five hundredths of second left in the first period.

126: Two weeks in a row Stilwell’s Wyatt Sheets and Jay’s Derick Shrum met in the finals. And it’s two weeks that Shrum is still without a point against Sheets. Sheets beat Shrum 5-0 after winning a 4-0 decision last week at Sallisaw.

132: Chance Blount took down the No. 1 seed, Vian’s Brett Vastine, by fall at 2:41. Vastine was the first top seed not to finish first. To reach the finals, Blount, the No. 3 seed, beat Wagoner’s Trenton Miller, the No. 2 seed.

138: It didn’t come easy for the two-time state champion, Tyler Tustin of Poteau. Yet, he found a way to post a 3-1 win over Sallisaw’s Gabe Taylor. Tustin scored an early takedown and added an insurance point after a hand-locking penalty on Taylor.

145: Brad Boswell won his second tournament title in two weeks with a victory by fall over Jay’s Brian Deleon at 3:25. Boswell scored several takedowns before trapping Deleon’s arm and pinning him to the mat.

152: Keaton Sheets scored the easiest title of the evening when Wagoner’s Tucker Hoffman forfeited.

160: A late takedown helped Vian’s Landon Decker win by major decision, 11-3, over Wagoner’s Fischer Medlin.

170: Much like Cannon at 120 pounds, Sallisaw’s Cale Wilson beat the clock and pinned Poteau’s Derek Francis with under a second left in the second period. Wilson was already up 5-0 when he turned Francis on his back.

182: Wagoner’s Roman Rodriguez — the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler of the upper weights — electrified the crowd with an upset victory over Vian’s Rowdy Simon. For Simon, it’s the second week in a row finishing second.

195: Hulbert’s Bryson McGowan was slapped with a stalling penalty at the end of the first period, and it loomed large in a 3-2 loss to Vian’s Cale Mays.

220: Wagoner’s Derek Marshall nearly lost in the semifinals to Vian’s Cody Monholland, but survived long enough to advance to the finals. Once there, he had no problem, beating Stilwell’s Mickey Brown by fall at 2:31.

Hwt: Vian’s Tre Locust had to work a little longer than he had in the quarterfinals and semifinals. After winning both bouts in the first period to reach the finals, Locust pinned Webbers Falls’ R.J. Wofford at 3:58.
