THS track teams combine for 10 state events

The Tahlquah High School track teams both combined to send people to state in ten different events at Saturday’s regional track meet in Tulsa Union.
The boys’ track team overall finished fifth while the girls’ team finished sixth with the boys’ team coming just three points away from finishing in thrd.
The events that the boys’ team qualified in includes the 100, 200, 400, 4x1, 4x4 and 4x8. The girls’ team qualified in the 4x8, long jump and high jump.
For the boys’ Calvin Riggs qualified in both the 100 and the 200. He finished fifth in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Also qualifying in the 100 was Ronald Mitchell who finished third.
Tim Justice qualified int he 400 after finishing fifth in the 400.
The 4x8 team of Quincy McDowell, Alemeo Carter, Rusty Fowler and Justice placed second at regionals Saturday. The 4x4 team of McDowell, Carter, Charles Bryant and Justice placed fourth while the 4x1 team of Mitchell, Phil Correa, Bryant and Greg Jackson placed second. The team also tied a school record with a time of 43.23.
“I told these kids that anything can happen at regionals just like I tell them now anything can happen at state,” THS boys’ track coach Bart Frank said. “I’ve seen times drop and people be sick, anything can happen at the state track meet and at regionals. The kids sucked it up and ran hard.”
Bryant, who qualified as a member of both the 4x1 and 4x4 relay teams also placed in the long jump, but didn’t qualify for state. He finished sixth with a jump of 20-6.
THS long jumper Jade Riggs qualified for state after winning the regional championship in the long jump. She had a jump of 17-4.
The 4x8 team of Addie Boulware, Sarah Hix, Kaelyn Grant and Magen Coward qualified for state on the girls’ side. The finished second at regionals.
In thie high jump, Shelbi Bowin qualified for state and finished second at regionals.
Grant, running on the 4x8 relay team, also finished sixth in the 800-meter run as did Alex Lewis in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run.
Tahlequah’s 4x1 relay team of Kassie White, Whitney Hatley, Jessica Vargas and Riggs also finished sixth as did the 4x2 which also had White. Hatley, Vargas and Riggs.
The 4x4 team of HIx, White, Hatley and Grant came in fifth, but fell just short of qualifying.
Kendra Elliott finished sixth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.
