RiverHawks women second on first day

PHOENIX —The Northeastern State Univerity golf team sits in second place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division II West Regional at The Legacy Golf Resort here Monday afternoon.
Stephanie Bird leads the 33-player field, carding an even-par 72 and teammate Courtney Epps is tied for second with a three-over par 75.
The RiverHawks carded a team total of 315 for the day and trail leader St. Edward’s University by three shots and carry a slim three shot lead over Lone Star Conference champions Tarleton State heading into Tuesday’s second round of competition.
Bird struggled on the front nine making the turn at one-over par, she birded hole 11 and 18 to finish the round with an even-par 72. Bird leads a group tied for 2nd by three shots that includes Epps. Epps also struggled on the front nine of the course and made the turn at three-over-par. She rallied on the final nine to shoot even-par to finish with a 75.
NSU’s Katie Miller had the highlight of the opening round, Miller’s shot on the par three 11th found the bottom of the cup. She rallied on the back nine to overshadow a dismal start. Miller is tied for tied for 23rd along with Taysha Butler with a 12 over 84. Shaunda Petree is 32nd heading into the second round with an 87 in the opening round.
Play continues on Tuesday with the second and concludes with Wednesday final round.
The top two teams in the regional advances to the NCAA Championships May 11-17 in Houston, Texas.
