The Hulbert High School football team saw a lot of positives in this season's spring scrimmage.
Dillon Brown threw for three touchdowns in the scrimmage Thursday. He threw to Cody Adair, Kyle Jenkins and Kenny Vance.
"Brown has been one of the biggest surprises with his passing,” HHS coach Mark Vance said. “He has worked very hard and is very easy to coach and is willing to learn our system. Vance will also be a tail back as well as a middle linebacker. He has been working hard this spring.”
Matt Fertig will be returning center and will also play defense. Rickey Carey will play offense and defense and has experience as a linebacker. Jon Ballard, a Sophomore, is a returning tackle, while Steve Swinford will return this year as a guard.
The receiving corps will be full of experience with Jenkins and J.D. Hancock. Skyler Heaton, along with Adair and Kole Ulrich and Jeffery Hardison will see a lot of action somewhere on the field.
Ely Baldridge will start in the offensive and defensive line. Baldridge has been one of the other big surprises as he has continued to improve, according to Coach Vance.
On defense, Mac Capps and Stoney Robison will help in the secondary. Clinton Kaekle, Colton Brave, and Tyler Harmon have fit in the defensive line and can play anywhere on the field. Michael Marrs will be defensive tackle while Dustin Justice will see a lot of action as an offensive tackle. Brett Walker is new this year and should be a big help on offense.
"Walker is very coachable and has been willing to continue to learn our system this spring," Vance said. “We had 32 kids out for spring football this year. I'm very excited about the upcoming season as we have new faces, new district and new teams to contend with,"
The Riders will go to several team camps this summer, starting at Warner, May 28-30. The Riders will face Warner, along with Hartshorne and Dewar.
The Riders will participate in the NSU team camp, June 4-6. Hulbert will also participate in the passing league, every Tuesday from June 10-July 15.
The action will start at 6:30 and go to approximately 8:30 if the Tuesday session is rained out, Thursday will be used as a makeup day.
