For Sequoyah High School, the search is on to fill the big shoes left behind by former Indians quarterback and Ole Miss signee Nathan Stanley.

It appears SHS coach Brent Scott has assigned that role to Garrett Drapeau.

The Indians are scheduled to hold their spring football game today at 2. During spring workouts, it has been Drapeau who has been taking most of the snaps at quarterback.

“There’s never a guaranteed starting spot in our program, but Drapeau will be the quarterback most likely,” Scott said. “We have all the confidence in the world in Garrett.”

The Indians lost several key starters, but Scott said Stanley and running back Hunter Cunningham might be the toughest to replace.

“I don’t know if you could ever fill their shoes,” Scott said. “I realized how good they were when we started practice this spring, how fortunate we were to have those players.”

Scott said Zach Gann is on line to be the featured back.

“We have three really good running backs coming back,” Scott said. “Gann will be a guy that we’ll probably highlight, but Brian Salazar and Ryan Mouse are two guys that carry the football really well and we look forward to seeing them share in the responsibilities that Hunter and (Chris) Littlebear did.”

While Scott is having to find bodies to put at quarterback and running back, he said he’s going to have no problem with his offensive line and should be a strength of next season’s football team, allowing Drapeau and Gann some help.

“Our offensive line from tackle to tackle is still intact, maybe the best that it’s ever been,” Scott said. “We’ve got two tight ends in our system and I don’t think we’ve ever had two tight ends in our system since I’ve been here.”

The spring football game is set to coincide with the school’s graduation ceremony which also is today. Scott said the game won’t be too intense.

“It will be a very short format, get in and get out and try to stay healthy,” Scott said. “Hopefully some families come in and our seniors can come and watch, the alumni and everybody. The main thing is the little bitty things that probably don’t show up in statistics, eliminate penalties, going hard, getting in a rhythm offensively, seeing guys chasing the football, not really interested in scoring a lot of points.”
