Jason Travis pitched six shutout innings and hit the game-tying home run in the seventh inning to force extra innings in game one to lead the Bandits in a doubleheader sweep over the Woodward Travellers, 6-5 in eight innings and 5-1 on Sunday evening at Phoenix Park.
Jason Travis (3-1), who came on in the third inning in relief of a struggling Wayne Coldwell, led off the bottom of the seventh inning for the Bandits, who trailed 5-4. He then hit a towering home run over the left field wall that tied the score at five.
In the extra frame, Travis put the Travellers down in order, setting up Brad Shankle’s game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning that scored Jared Copeland from third base.
“Travis just comes in whenever we need him and he does a good job,” Bandits coach Sergio Espinal said. “I’m glad he got the win. He’s a battler.”
The Bandits trailed in the first game by as much as 5-0 after starter Coldwell got into trouble and only lasted two innings.
Woodward scored one run in the first and exploded for four more in the second.
“I think we weren’t ready yet at the beginning,” Espinal said. “Wayne was just throwing the ball. He wasn’t pitching.”
The Bandits broke through in the fourth inning when Brandon Espinal, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on Nate Linch's double to make the score 5-1. Both Linch and Phil Correa also scored in the inning as the Bandits cut the lead down to 5-3.
Wes Newman’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth inning cut the lead down to 5-4, setting up Travis’s game-tying home run in the seventh to force extra innings.
To leadoff the bottom of the eighth, Copeland drew a walk. Greg Jackson then tried to sacrifice Copeland to second base, but instead of trying to throw Jackson out at first, Woodward made an attempt to get Copeland out at second. Everybody was safe, leaving runners at second and first with nobody out.
Newman was then intentionally walked, loading the bases for Shankle who ended the game with a single.
Shankle (3-0) was game two’s starter and pitched all seven innings, only giving up one run on a solo home run in the fourth inning that cut a 2-0 Bandits lead down to 2-1.
The Bandits gave themselves some insurance though when Correa hit his second home run of the season, a 3-run shot that scored Newman and Travis, giving the Bandits a 5-1 lead.
“Shankle just bared down,” Espinal said. “He’s becoming a pretty good pitcher for us.”
The Bandits (17-7) next head off to Bartlesville for the Winget Tournament at Doenges Stadium where the Bandits will play on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. against Lawrence, Kan. in the first round.
