Published August 19, 2008 09:08 am - Lady Indians spike Salina, 3-1 By MARK SECRATT Press special writer TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The Sequoyah High School volleyball team come out victorious in its season opener against Salina Lady Wildcats 3-1 (20-25,25-23,25-2326-24) on Monday evening at Sequoyah High School.
The Lady Indians were led by three-year starter and senior Kaylae Sourjohn’s,17 points 21 digs, and four kills. Nothing about this game was easy for the Lady Indians who found themselves trailing late in all four matches. Unlike Salina, who had been in a tournament last weekend, it was the Lady Indians’ first game and it showed. They came out flat allowing Salina to take the first match. Coach Jay Herrin's key time-outs got the girls to respond and come from behind in the final three matches. " I just told them to get in the right places do their assignments and not worry about anything else but just doing their jobs on the court." Herrin said. "We weren't aggressive enough serving the ball or hitting the ball. We were playing not to lose instead of playing to win." Win they did in dramatic fashion. Trailing 24-23, the girls rallied to win the final match, 26-24. The Lady Indians are a young team with only three seniors, but the sophomores held their own against Salina. Sophomore Bryna Wilson, who was a last minute starter, finished with 24 assists,14 points, and three aces. "Bryna did a good job running our offense and passing the ball to our hitters" Herrin said. Another Sophomore who stood out was Laurin Keen, adding defensive help with 11 digs and two blocks "Salina’s scrappy,” Herrin said. They want to keep the ball alive, keep popping it over the net until we make a mistake. You’ve got to come out and kill the ball." The Lady Indians travel on today to East Central who beat the girls on their home court last year. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
