Sequoyah continues hot streak

By TRAVIS METCALF

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

Sequoyah High School fast-pitch softball coach Jeff Turtle couldn’t be happier with the way the two games the Lady Indians played in Warner on Monday had gone.

The Lady Indians not only got two wins, but Turtle was able to play a lot of players in the process as the Lady Indians beat Warner in game one, 4-0, and Sallisaw in game two, 10-4.

“They’re doing better taking the walk when we’re offered them,” Turtle said. “We’re not swinging at bad pitches.”

That was no more evident than in the Lady Indians’ game against Sallisaw in which the Lady Indians drew 13 walks.

The Lady Indians put the game away early with four runs in the first as Sequoyah’s first four batters, Haylee Beck, Saharra Henson, Caitlin Dry and Cortney Glass all scored.

Keisha Jones and Taylor Yochum followed that up with scores in the second inning while the Lady Indians put another four-spot on the board in the third when Yochum scored her second run along with Brenna McLemore, Roxanne Harmon and Kristin Carder.

Yochum finished the second game going 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Glass started the game, only going two innings and allowing just one hit while striking out five. Dee Adair finished the final three innings of the five-inning game.

The first game had a little more tension in it as the Lady Indians continued to struggle scoring.

However, Lindsey Hammer got the Lady Indians on the board in the second inning when she scored on a fielder’s choice by Shannon Barnett.

The lead increased to 2-0 in the third on Beck’s score off of a fielder’s choice by Glass.

Finally, in the fifth, the Lady Indians increased the lead to 4-0 off of scores by Beck and Henson. Henson finished that game 1-2. Glass went 1-3 with two RBIs.

“We’re still not swinging the bats real well yet,” Turtle said. “Both teams were playing deep on us and we hit a couple pretty hard. We lifted the ball instead of driving the ball. We had five hits in the first game. We’re just not being consistent enough to get back-to-back hits.”

The Lady Indians (8-1) will next play today against Stilwell at the SHS softball field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
