Published August 19, 2008 09:13 am - THS volleyball opens with tall task By TRAVIS METCALF Press special writer TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The Tahlequah High School volleyball team opens it season against the toughest opponent they’ll face all season today.
The Lady Tigers are at Tulsa Bishop Kelley starting at 5 p.m. Kelley is the defending Class 5A state champion and has won two out of the last three state championships. “They are just the dominant team of class 5A,” THS coach Don Ogden said. “The biggest expectation is to compete and not be intimidated. We’re playing the returning state champion at their home, let’s find out where we are and what we need to work on.” The Lady Tigers don’t have a whole lot of experience, but they don’t have very much youth either. The Lady Tigers only have one senior, but have seven juniors. The Lady Tigers only have two starters returning in Haley Kay and Sarah Nelson. The Lady Tigers also have Hannah Barlow, Lindsey Risenhoover, Kirsty Hitchcock, Cassie white, Britney Ozment and Danielle Whitehorn. “We’re looking at it as we’re going to be a team with a nice 2-year run,” Ogden said. “On the surface, they appear to be inexperienced, but I think they’ll catch up. The key to this group is they really, genuinely like each other. Because of that, I think we can get things done in a hurry.” After Kelley, the Lady Tigers go to the Sequoyah Tournament Friday and Saturday, then at Catoosa and at Sand Springs before coming home for their home opener against Bixby on Sept. 2. Senior night will be on Sept. 25 against Okay while the season finale is Sept. 30 at Muskogee. The conference tournament at Catoosa is Oct. 2. “This group, because of the closeness of them, I think there is a lot of success ahead of them. They’ll self-correct their mistakes and play harder next time and with this group, they are going to play an entire year at the high school level and then get ready for another year. (Today) we start our 2-year run.”
