MUSKOGEE — The last dress rehearsal is over.
The next time the Tahlequah High School football team puts on its game jerseys, the Tigers will be ready to open the regular season on Sept. 5.
Until that time however, the Tigers had one last chance to impress coach Tuffy Thornton and Thornton said he couldn’t have been any happier.
“We did good, we did real good,” Thornton said. “We’re going to be able to run the football. We’ve got two good quarterbacks. We’re excited.”
The Tigers showed a lot of emotion on the field as they scrimmaged Pryor, Wagoner and Hilldale on Thursday night at Hilldale High School in Muskogee.
Wagoner was a late addition as its scrimmage originally at Locust Grove was scrubbed due a bacteria outbreak earlier in the week.
Quarterbacks Dusten Knight and Colin Scarsdale continued to move the offense, mostly using the run, and neither seems to have gotten an edge heading into the first game of the season, though Scarsdale started for the second straight scrimmage.
“They both did things well,” Thornton said. “Colin was the first, but Dusten had just gone 20 plays on defense. I’m not saying that if we get the opening kickoff first against Catoosa, that Dusten isn’t running out onto the field. Neither one of them have separated themselves from the other one.”
Knight led the team to its first touchdown on the night as Jeremy Dry ran one in from one-yard out against Pryor.
The Tigers defensive line then stepped up as Pryor’s first four plays wound up as a loss of yardage or sacks. leading the defensive players to jump up and down, bang helmets and celebrate like it was a real football game.
“This was a lot more intense,” Thornton said. “We had a battle with Pryor that was pretty good for both teams. It got real heated, real physical.”
Pryor did finally get a touchdown, but they had to earn it.
They scored on like the eighth play,” Thornton said. “In a game, we would have had three 3-and-outs already.”
The Tiger defense also forced a turnover as Jessie Morrison snagged a interception against Hilldale.
Also against Hilldale, the Tigers had two more touchdowns, both of which were rushing touchdowns.
