Weather works in SHS' favor in 11-1 win

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

The Tahlequah area started feeling the remnants of what was once Hurricane Gustav on Tuesday which led to a bizarre set of events for the Sequoyah High School softball team.

Lightly raining throughout most of the day, it came pouring down late in the fourth inning. Ironically, the rain helped the Lady Indians score 11 runs all with two outs in an 11-1 win over Wagoner at the SHS softball field.

“I think the weather affected the timing of Wagoner’s pitcher,” SHS coach JeffTurtle said. “I’m sure she missed her spots.”

The Lady Indians had trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lady Indians’ first two batters reached base.

Hoping to just get anything going, Turtle chose to sacrifice them over to second and third. However, a popout followed, leaving those runners at second and third with two outs.

Taylor Johnson then started the rally off with a single that drove the go-ahead runs, giving SHS a 2-1 lead. That was followed by a walk by Nikki Lewis, a single by Saharra Henson and a double by Cortney Glass scoring two more runs as the Lady Indians earned a 4-1 lead. The flood gates opened from there as Johnson eventually batted again and ended the game on the run rule with a triple. Johnson went 2-for-2 in the inning and drove in three runs.

“They didn’t throw real hard,” Turtle said. “She didn’t change speed much but it wasn’t as hard as we had seen over the weekend so we made our adjustments by staying back.”

Sequoyah had two chances to score before that fourth inning, probably none better than the first when the Lady Indians had the bases loaded with nobody out, but couldn’t get any runs across.

Wagoner took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

“After that first inning, I thought (Wagoner) had confidence,” Turtle said. We hadn’t scored yet even though we had a lot of chances.”

The Lady Indians are scheduled next to play Tahlequah High School today starting at 4 p.m.
