Indians start tough pre-district schedule By TRAVIS METCALF TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS — The Sequoyah High School football team starts a grueling beginning to the season on Friday when it plays 4A Fort Gibson at Sequoyah High School.
This new edition of the Indians has a lot of questions that has to be answered, many of which should be answered against the Tigers Friday. “The start of the season is always tough for all teams involved,” SHS coach Brent Scott said. “With us losing a lot of players, there’s going to always be questions we have to answer. You don’t get those answers until you get into a game.” For starters, the Indians will be playing their first game in three years without the help of quarterback Nathan Stanley. Garrett Drapeau will try to be man to fill the void left by Stanley who is now at Ole Miss. “I expect Garrett to have a wonderful game,” Scott said. “There are a lot of things that he does that doesn’t show up in statistics. Garrett is exciting. He’s excited. He’s a great competitor. He’s going to do whatever he can to win.” The Indians are also trying to replace running back Hunter Cunningham. Scott said Zach Gann would get the start in that spot. Fort Gibson’s depth will pose a challenge for the Indians. “They have good looking kids,” Scott said. “They have some size, good athletes, linebackers are big. I think they’re going to play two quarterbacks, two or three running backs, they run hard and they do a good job up front.” The Indians open the season with a tough schedule as they start off with Fort Gibson then travel to 6A Muskogee against the Muskogee High School junior varsity team then play Victory Christian before starting the district schedule against Vian and Keys. “We feel like we have a tough district and these early games should prepare us,” Scott said. “Just the luck of the draw we have Vian week 4 and Keys week 5 so our first five games I don’t think we would have wanted it like that.” The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Sequoyah High School’s Thompson Field.
