The Lone Star Conference has released its preseason rankings and both of Northeastern State University’s women’s and men’s basketball teams are predicted to finish in the top half of the North division.
The men are predicted to finish fourth, just behind Texas A&M-Commerce and Southwestern Oklahoma which were predicted to finish third and second. Central Oklahoma was predicted to win the North Division.
Tarleton State was predicted to win the South Division.
Along with the fourth-place prediction, NSU senior guard Aaron Arango was selected the North Division Preseason Player of the Year.
Arango was given five votes out of a possible 16 from LSC head coaches, sports information directors and other media representatives.
Last season, Arango averaged 12.3 points per game, including leading the RiverHawks in scoring 13-of-28 games last season, along with 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
Last season the RiverHawks finished third in the North Division, but lost a heart-breaker in the first round of the LSC Tournament, 65-64, to Tarleton State.
Abilene Christian’s Dejan Sencanski was selected the South Division’s preseason player of the year.
The RiverHawk women, meanwhile, were picked to finish third in the North Division this season with Texas A&M-Commerce selected second and Central Oklahoma selected first.
West Texas A&M was picked to be first in the North Division.
The RiverHawks open the season on Nov. 15. The women open at home against Southwest Baptist University while the men take on Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, ark.
