Commerce roars back to nip NSU

By TRAVIS METCALF
Sports Editor

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

There are many reasons why the Northeastern State University lost Saturday afternoon’s homecoming game against Texas A&M-Commerce at Doc Wadley Stadium.

NSU had two punts blocked in the second half, both of which resulted in touchdowns.

NSU’s offense had trouble moving the football in the second half.

NSU’s defense couldn’t stop Commerce’s Terry Mayo who had 204 yards passing and a touchdown, Willie Thornton who had 128 yards receiving and Nabil El-Amin who had 116 yards rushing.

However, in the end, the game rested on the foot of Jared Homer who had hit a school record 55-yard field goal earlier in the season at Tarleton State.

Not this time.

This time, Homer’s 52-yard potential game-winning field goal missed wide right as the RiverHawks gave up a 27-3 lead and lost to the Lions, 38-37, dropping the RiverHawks to 0-6 on the season.

“They want the success, but they haven’t learned how to get the success,” NSU coach Kenny Evans said “There’s no doubt that the past years have taken a toll. It takes 11 players on the field in every area and there are some players that have that doubt or don’t play aggressively or play the same way.”

There were lots of moments that could have been the turning point in the RiverHawks losing a 24-point lead.

With NSU leading 27-10, Commerce’s Taylor Fore blocked NSU’s Joe Kok’s punt and was returned by Aresnial Richar 24 yards to make the score 27-17 with 9:31 left in the third quarter.

Then with just over three minutes left in the third and NSU leading 34-17, Fore blocked another one and this time it was returned to the NSU 3-yard line where El-Amin ran one in three plays later to knock the score down to 34-24.

The lead was cut to 34-31 when Mayo scored from two yards out with 14:53 to go in the fourth quarter.

After Homer made a 43-yard field goal to make the score 37-31, the Lions got the ball and marched down the field and scored with just over two minutes left on Mayo’s 2-yard touchdown plunge, giving the Lions their first lead of the game.

“I think the biggest difference was on special teams,” Evans said. “We made some unbelievable plays on special teams in the first half. In the second half, they blocked some punts and it was exactly what we practiced against all week. We had some guys, again, that made some mistakes. In Pressure situations, you never know how a person’s going to respond and we did not respond well.”

NSU looked like it was going to steamroll the Lions.
