The Fairland Owls defeated the Hulbert Riders, 41-18, on Friday night despite 117 yards rushing by Ricky Carey Friday. The Owls scored in every quarter to hold off the Riders.

After the Owls had built a 21-0 lead, the Riders scored in the second quarter as Kole Ulrich went 13 yards. The pass failed as FHS led 21-6.

HHS scored again in the third quarter when Dillon Brown found Skyler Heaton for 23 yards to narrow the Owls lead to 35-12. The run failed, then the Riders added their final score in the fourth quarter when Carey went from one yard for a 35-18 score. The pass once again failed.

Fairland scored in the first quarter as Yancy Lett found J.C. Morrow for 22 yards. Jessie Drosche added the kick for a 7-0 lead.

FHS scored twice in the second quarter as Lett found Drosche for 21 yards. Drosche got the kick for a 14-0 lead. The Owls final score of the second half came when Lett ran for 15 yards and Drosche got the kick for a 21-0 lead at the half.

"I was proud of the team as they played much better,” HHS coach Mark Vance said. “The major thing is we had to many turnovers to win the game. Our offense played well especially Carey with his 117 yards rushing. We had our first touchdown pass of the season. Defensively we played well at times but we still need improvement as we still gave up to many big plays. Matt Fertig had another good game on defense and Cole Colburn had a good game for us tonight.” said Coach Mark Vance.

The Owls scored twice in the third quarter as Lett had a 25 yard pass to Drosche and Drosche added the kick for a 28-6 lead.

FHS scored again in the quarter when Tony Short ran for three yards and Drosche got the kick for a 35-6 lead. Fairland scored once in the fourth as Drosche went one yard and got the kick for the final score of 41-18.

The Riders had 20 first downs to the Owls 14 and had 192 yards rushing to 116 for Fariland.

The Owls had more passing yards at 150 to 69. The Owls had 266 yards to the Riders 261 in total offense. The Riders had only one punt in the game for 36 yards by Brown.

Carey had 117 yards on 22 carrires and Ulrich rushed for 38 yards on six carries. J.D. Hancock had two receptions for 47 yards while Heaton had one reception for 22 yards, a touchdown.

Fertig had four kickoffs for 85 yards. Terrence Blue had one kickoff return for 15 yards. Fertig led the team in tackles with 16 followed by Mark Squyers with 10.

Mac Capps and Tyler Harmon had seven tackles each. Fertig had one sack. The Riders cut down on their penalties with five for 32 yards. The key of the game was the seven turnovers with four fumbles ans three interceptions.

Brown was two for 10 with 34 yards with one touchdown pass and one interception. Heaton was one for two with 35 yards threw the air and one intersection. Lett had nine completions with 18 attempts for 150 passing and three touchdown for the Owls.

"Next week is homecoming so we are looking for a big win as the Riders have not won a homecoming game in some time,” Vance said. “Everyone is looking forward to the game as we play Oklahoma Union. We must not turnover the ball and not give up big plays. With that I think we have a good chance to win.”
