Tigers can't sustain early momentum

By TRAVIS METCALF

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS

The Tahlequah High School football team came into Friday night’s game against Coweta flying high.

And it appeared the Tigers would fly right past Coweta in the first quarter, however, from the second quarter on, the Tigers fell back down to earth as Tahlequah suffered its first loss of the district season, 37-7.

“We’re better than the score indicated,” THS coach Tuffy Thornton said. “The wheels fell off for us in the second half.”

The Tigers took the opening kickoff and and told Coweta they weren’t going to go down easy as the Tigers marched down the field only to have Michael Crawford punch it into the end zone from 2 yards out to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

The score remained 7-0 heading into the second quarter and it appeared again the Tigers might add to it.

Twice the Tigers had forced Coweta turnovers that gave them good field position.

Nigel Turner picked off his third pass of the season, giving the Tigers good field position inside the Coweta 20. The Tigers then recovered a fumble, again giving the Tigers field position inside the Coweta 20, however Tahlequah could do nothing with them.

“We had a chance to be up 21-0 in the second quarter,” Thornton said. “We had our opportunities.”

Coweta eventually made them pay.

Coweta’s Colton Sisco broke a 78-yard run for a score to tie the game midway through the first quarter.

Michael Webber then caught a 59-yard pass from Dillon Vaughn to give Coweta a 14-7 lead.

After a field goal, it appeared the Tigers would go in at halftime down 17-7, however with 10 seconds left in the half, Sisco broke the game open with an 80-yard run to make it 24-7 at the half.

“Playing defense the way we do, if somebody’s not in their gap, if somebody does something they aren’t supposed to do, we give up big plays,” Thornton said.

Coweta then put the final nail in the coffin on the opening drive of the second half as Webber’s 80-yard pass from Vaughn gave Coweta a 31-7 lead.

“We were right there with them right before they got a big play before the half,” Thornton said. “Then we kickoff and they get another big play. We didn’t play very well after that, once the lead got insurmountable.”
