BREAKING NEWS: Robinson named Northeastern State's head football coach

Northeastern State has hired Rob Robinson as its new head football coach, according to a release sent out by the school on Thursday.

Robinson — the 19th head coach in NSU history — takes over for Kenny Evans, who was relieved of his duties as NSU's head coach on Nov. 16. Evans went 22-44 during his six seasons at NSU.

Robinson takes over at Northeastern State after a 12-year stint at Washburn, where he took over offensive coordinator duties in 2009.

In 2013, Washburn's offense averaged 40.9 points per game, which was third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association behind only Northwest Missouri State (45.4) and Pittsburg State (46.5).

During his time at Washburn, Robinson also coached running backs and wide receivers. He was instrumental in Washburn quarterback Dane Simoneau finishing second in the Harlon Hill Trophy voting in 2011.

Robinson graduated from William Jewell College in 2000. He was a four-year letterman at fullback for the Cardinals.

After college, Robinson spent one season at Pittsburg State as a graduate assistant. He coached defensive backs with current Washburn head coach Craig Schurig.

Robinson will take over a RiverHawks club that went 2-9 (2-8 MIAA) during the 2013 season. One of those losses was a 48-3 setback against Washburn on Sept. 21.

Robinson's first game as NSU's head coach will be in early September of 2014. The RiverHawks are slated to play at Pittsburg State on either Sept. 4 or 6. The RiverHawks will play at Washburn on Nov. 8.
