NSU tennis wins again
HAYS, Kan. — The No. 37-ranked Northeastern State women’s tennis team posted a 9-0 MIAA sweep over Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon on the FHSU Tennis Courts.
The RiverHawks (16-2, 7-1 MIAA) recorded their seventh 9-0 decision of the season, while the Tigers (8-5, 2-3 MIAA) suffered their worst loss of the year. The 16 wins for Northeastern State are the most since the team went 19-5 in the 2009 campaign.
“This was a difficult trip for us from a traveling perspective,” NSU coach Amanda Stone said. “I was happy that we didn’t let that affect our play. We were very business-like for both matches and got the job done quickly and efficiently.”
The visitors conceded just five games in doubles play and did not drop a set in singles action.
The first point of the match came from the third doubles court, where junior Martina Bruzikova tag-teamed with sophomore Barbora Jirickova to post an 8-0 win over Laura Johnson and Brianna Watkins.
An 8-2 triumph on the top doubles court gave NSU a 2-0 lead. The No. 19-ranked duo of senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov defeated Melissa Skovira and Brittney Ricci.
Singles play concluded after the junior team of Jeanne Mallem and Houda Bellamine defeated Caitlyn Wark and Camille Caron-Bedard 8-3 at the second flight.
Bruzikova, Jirickova and Mallem all recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles play to clinch the team competition from courts 3, 5 and 6, respectively.
Bellamine added a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Johnson on the sixth court, Belejova topped Caron-Bedard 6-0, 6-3 on the top court and Savchenkov posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ricci from the second position.
Northeastern State will return to Tahlequah for a 2 p.m. meeting Thursday with Lindenwood University (4-8, 2-4 MIAA).
