FORT SILL — Tahlequah doubled up on its state championships on Tuesday.
The Tahlequah boys golf team finished the Class 5A state tournament at Fort Sill Golf Course with a 54-hole total of 912 — one stroke better than Shawnee (913) in second place.
Tahlequah’s Jake Johnson also picked up state medalist honors, collecting a final-round score of 74, which was the same as Lawton MacArthur’s Trent Meisel. Johnson entered the final 18 holes with a one stroke lead over Meisel, and he held on to win an individual state championship.
The team championship is the first for Tahlequah High School — in any sport — since 2006, when slowpitch softball won its second crown. The last championship in a boys sport prior to Tuesday was Tahlequah’s baseball title in 1996.
