Tahlequah’s Jake Johnson garners All-State honors after individual, state titles

The honors just keep rolling in for Jake Johnson.

After winning Class 5A’s individual championship and team championship, Tahlequah’s Jake Johnson was named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s All-State team this week.

The award is bittersweet for Johnson, who will was the lone Tahlequah golfers to make the All-State cut.

“It feels great,” he said, “but I wish all three of the seniors (Kyler Arnall, Brent Spradlin, Aaron Crawley) could have made All-State, as well. They worked just as hard as I did for four years.”

Johnson will take part in the All-State tournament on July 28 at Cherokee Hills Golf Club in Catoosa. Johnson will be part of the 12-member East team, which will take on the West — which will be led by Class 3A state champion, Zach Schaefer of Oklahoma Christian School.

Johnson is the only player on the East team that won an individual state championship.

But Johnson’s stress level will be virtually non-existent at the All-State tournament.

“I won't put too much pressure on myself,” Johnson, who shot a 54-hole total of 215 to win the 5A championship at Fort Sill Golf Club in southwestern Oklahoma. Johnson beat a soon-to-be teammate on the All-State team, Lawton MacArthur’s Trent Miesel.

“I just wanna go out and have fun in my last high school tournament.”

Nearly two weeks removed from claiming the individual and state championships, Johnson said he still reflects on the accomplishments with amazement.

“I really don't feel any different until someone brings it up,” Johnson said, “and I think, ‘wow we really did it.’”

Johnson added that people have been showering him and his teammates with praise.

“t feels great,” he said. “Everyone has been congratulating us and it never gets old. I couldn't imagine us not winning it now.”

Now Johnson will shift his focus to his collegiate career at Northeastern State.

“I'm gonna prepare the same way I've prepared with high school, with a little more training to prepare for (NSU) coach (Scott) Varner’s workouts,” Johnson said.

Experience comes from encountering the same things in the same ways over and over again. Oklahoma’s Geneo Grissom and Julian Wilson have that at defensive end and nickleback in bunches.
However, both will be seeing new things when practice begins. Grissom is moving to outside linebacker. Wilson will be getting a look at cornerback as his senior season begins

The NCAA once cracked down on colleges that went too far luring top prospects, then it targeted teams that lathered players with special treatment. That was until the NCAA's get-tough approach backfired, rendering it ineffective and creating an opportunity for those who want to play dirty.

  • Really one true champion?

I decided to spare the colleagues in front of me – and myself from making a scene – by holding back flipping my table at the Big 12 Conference Football Media Days in Dallas.
I had become exhausted by the constant use and misrepresentation by the Big 12 with their moniker of “One True Champion.” If they are going to live with the slogan, then they need to abide by that slogan.
Perhaps its a simple case that they are keeping constant with the poor math of the 10-team Big 12 Conference.
