Tournaments haven't been too kind to the Sequoyah boys this season. The Indians had to settle for fifth place at the Jerry O'Quin Tournament in Inola and third place at the Shrine Classic in Muskogee.
So what better place to head to this week than the venue where Sequoyah won a tournament last season?
That's right, the Class 3A No. 5 Indians will head to Bulldog Arena in Jay for the Tri-State Classic. Sequoyah will take on Locust Grove's junior varsity team in the first round of the tournament today at 3.
In the championship game last season, Sequoyah knocked off Kansas, 72-57, with Ryan Helsley leading the way with 33 points for the Indians.
If Sequoyah (9-2) has a rematch with Kansas this year, it won't be in the title game. The Comets could possibly be Sequoyah's semifinal opponent if both teams advance to the 8:20 contest on Friday night.
Jay, Westville, Broken Bow and Colcord are on the other side of the bracket. The championship game is at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday.
The Sequoyah girls (11-1) will also compete in the Tri-State Classic with the Lady Indians taking on Westville today at 1:40. With a win, Sequoyah would play Friday at 7 against the winner of Broken Bow-Colcord.
The girls championship game is Saturday night at 7.
While both Sequoyah heads north and east, both Tahlequah teams will head west and a little south. Tahlequah will take part in the John Nobles Tournament in Moore.
The Tahlequah boys (4-8) will challenge 6A No. 19 Southmoore (7-5) in the first round at 11:30 Thursday morning. Other teams in the field include Flower Mound (Texas), Northwest Classen, RCA (Texas), Ponca City, Moore and Lawton.
On the girls side of the Moore tournament, Tahlequah will play Moore in the first round at 1. The girls tournament will also feature Southmoore, Ponca City, Lawton Eisenhower, Muskogee, Lawton and Choctaw.
Much closer to home, the Keys girls will take on Muldrow today at 4:30 after the Lady Cougars knocked off Bishop Kelley on Tuesday night in the first round of the Old Fort Classic in Fort Gibson. The Keys boys will play Bishop Kelley on Friday at the Fort Gibson tournament.
In Kiefer, Hulbert will take part in the Dale Calvert Invitational.
The Hulbert boys will play Oaks at 2:30 in a rematch of Oaks' 57-45 win over Hulbert at the Porum tournament in December.
The Hulbert girls will be matched up with Depew in the first round at 4.
All the tournaments will continue on both Friday and Saturday.
