Sequoyah girls squeak by Stilwell

Sequoyah boys drop regular-season finale.

The Sequoyah girls basketball team needed a late effort to edge by Stilwell 57-54 Tuesday night inside Sequoyah Event Center.

The Sequoyah Lady Indians used a 38-point combined effort from forwards Loren Young (22 points) and Audrey Ballou (16 points) to outlast the Stilwell Lady Indians’ inside presence of Sara Fountain (26 points).

“Last time we played Stilwell, (Fountain) only played six minutes before she got hurt,” Sequoyah coach Larry Shade said. “She was the difference maker for them tonight. Luckily for us, our two post girls were able to put up a lot of points and slow down their offense.”

Sequoyah forced 21 Stilwell turnovers, while only handing the ball back to the visitors 13 times. The home Lady Indians also recorded 18 turnovers.

Stilwell held an alarming advantage at the free-throw line, as the visiting Lady Indians finished the game 25-for-29 (86 percent). Sequoyah shot just 12 of 21 (57 percent) at the charity stripe.

The fast-paced style for Sequoyah would prove to be the difference maker, however, as the home side was able to wear down Stilwell late.

“Near the end we went out of our zone press and went to a man press to try and slow the ball down,” Shade said. “I don’t think they were ready for that, because they got a little erratic at the end.”

Sequoyah jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter, but it was Stilwell who led 30-28 at intermission. The home team would regain the advantage right before the end of the third quarter and power ahead by eight at 57-49 with 33 seconds to play. A few late mental mistakes, including a foul on a three-point shooter, allowed Stilwell to dwindle the final tally to just three points.
