State briefs

SAN ANTONIO — Shawn Glover scored 24 points and hit the game-winning jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining to help Oral Roberts outlast Incarnate Word 79-77 on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (10-8, 4-1 Southland) shot 52 percent from the field. Bobby Word hit five 3-pointers to finish with 17 points and D.J. Jackson added 14.

Denzel Livingston led Incarnate Word (14-3, 2-2) with 26 points and Anthony Horton chipped in 18.

Oral Roberts led by 12 at the midway mark in the first half, but Incarnate Word surged back to take the lead early in the second. With the score tied at 67, Glover took over, scoring 10 of the team's final 12 points.

Glover answered a Horton jumper with one of his own to put Oral Roberts on top. Sam Burmeister tied it back up with a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left, which set up Glover's game-winning shot.

Tulsa gets past Marshall with strong 2nd half

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — James Woodard scored 17 points as Tulsa beat Marshall 69-52 on Saturday for its first road win of the season.

Tulsa trailed 25-20 at halftime after making just 8 of 32 shots in the opening 20 minutes. The Golden Hurricane made twice as many baskets in the second frame and shot 61.5 percent, leading to 49 points. Tulsa made 5 of 7 shots from behind the arc and 12 of 14 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Marshall (6-13, 0-4) was led by Chris Thomas with 14 points and Kareem Canty had 12 and nine assists. The Thundering Herd shot just 32.8 percent for the game.

No. 11 Oklahoma State rolls over Texas Tech

STILLWATER — Brittney Martin scored 15 points to lead No. 11 Oklahoma State in an 82-56 rout of Texas Tech on Saturday.

Liz Donohoe added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Cowgirls (16-1, 5-1 Big 12), while Brittany Atkins scored 14, LaShawn Jones had 13 and Kendra Suttles chipped in with 10. Oklahoma State shot 50 percent as a team.

Texas Tech (6-11, 0-6) was led by Amber Battle with 11 points. The Lady Raiders were just 1 of 9 on 3-pointers.

Oklahoma State led by just one point with 1:51 left in the first half, but made three baskets in a row, including a jumper by Martin, to take a 33-28 lead at the break.

The second half was all Oklahoma State, though. The Cowgirls started the period on a 20-5 run — started and ended by treys from Donohoe — as they ran away from the Lady Raiders.

  • Sooners shifting several positions

Experience comes from encountering the same things in the same ways over and over again. Oklahoma’s Geneo Grissom and Julian Wilson have that at defensive end and nickleback in bunches.
However, both will be seeing new things when practice begins. Grissom is moving to outside linebacker. Wilson will be getting a look at cornerback as his senior season begins

The NCAA once cracked down on colleges that went too far luring top prospects, then it targeted teams that lathered players with special treatment. That was until the NCAA's get-tough approach backfired, rendering it ineffective and creating an opportunity for those who want to play dirty.

  • Really one true champion?

I decided to spare the colleagues in front of me – and myself from making a scene – by holding back flipping my table at the Big 12 Conference Football Media Days in Dallas.
I had become exhausted by the constant use and misrepresentation by the Big 12 with their moniker of “One True Champion.” If they are going to live with the slogan, then they need to abide by that slogan.
Perhaps its a simple case that they are keeping constant with the poor math of the 10-team Big 12 Conference.
