Tucker ousted in OGA tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY — Zach Tucker’s bid for a Oklahoma Golf Association amateur title came to an end Tuesday in central Oklahoma. Tucker, a soon-to-be senior at Northeastern State, lost 3 and 1 to Jeffrey Topp of Midwest City in the Round of 16 at Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club.

“I played well today,” Tucker said via text message to the Tahlequah Daily Press. “Just wasn’t able to get the putts to drop in a match where it came down to a putting contest.”

Tucker fell short of the quarterfinals in the match play tournament after posting two victories on Monday.

“We both hit the ball great, and he was just able to roll in a few more putts,” Tucker said of Topp.

“I can’t be mad. I had a good tournament. I shot my career tournament low, 63, to get the (No.) 3 seed overall.”

Topp entered the tournament as the No. 46 seed.

Tucker wasn’t the only high seed to fall on Tuesday. Chris Muriana (No. 1 seed) and Sam Lee (No. 4 seed) — both from Stillwater — both lost in the top portion of the bracket, which will feature Chandler Rusk (No. 48) and Nathan Hughes (No. 21) in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The other semifinalists set to square off on Wednesday are No. 6 seed Taylor Moore of Edmond and the second overall seed Talor Gooch of Midwest City.

As for Tucker, he’s turning his attention to his senior year with the RiverHawks.

“It’s been a solid summer, and I am ready to begin my senior year,” he said. “I have very high goals this year. At the top [is] carrying my team to a (birth) into the NCAA finals and earning All-American honors.”

Northeastern State will begin its 2013-2014 golf season on Sept. 9 at the UNK Fall Invitational in Kearney, Neb.
