Sequoyah wins 2 in regional play

Class 3A No. 1 Sequoyah got within a game of another fastpitch state trip Thursday as the Lady Indians used a perfect game by Kati Phillips to propel them past Keys 18-0 and into a winner’s bracket final where they beat Kansas 8-2.

Sequoyah (31-6) meets the winner of the noon game between Kansas and Verdigris at 2 p.m. today and must be defeated twice to halt a journey to Oklahoma City next week.

Phillips struck out five against Keys, which ended its season with an 11-1 loss to Verdigris. Kelsey Leach was 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. Bailee Ratliff and Sydney Smith were 3-for-3. Ratliff scored twice, drove in seven runs and homered while Smith had three RBIs.

In beating Kansas, Kati Phillips went the distance for the Lady Indians, striking out five and giving up  seven hits. Smith and Jamie Leach each went 2-for-3 with Smith homering in one trip.

For Keys (20-20), Sydni Rainbolt was 2-for-4 against Verdigris.
