AFTERNOON UPDATE: OU hires Hughes as baseball coach

NORMAN — Oklahoma will hire former Virginia Tech coach Pete Hughes as its next baseball coach. The hiring was first reported by the Virginia Times Union and later confirmed by an OU source.

The Sooners have been in the market for a coach since Sunny Golloway resigned to take the job at Auburn on June 14.

Hughes, 44, has been the Hokies’ head coach for the last seven seasons with a 222-174 record. Only two of those seasons included NCAA tournament appearances. This past season was his best. Virginia Tech hosted an NCAA tournament regional for the first time. It was the reward for going 35-19 in the regular season and advancing to the ACC tournament championship game.

The Hokies finished the year at 40-22 after OU claimed the NCAA tournament regional in Blacksburg.

The seven-season stint at Virginia Tech was Hughes’ third as a head coach. Prior to taking over the Hokies’ program in 2007, Hughes led Boston College to a 250-181-1 record from 1999-2006.

His first head coaching job is the only one that has brought to this part of the country. Hughes led Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas from 1997-98.

Hughes, a Massachusetts native, graduated from Davidson in 1990 where he played baseball and football.
