AFTERNOON UPDATE: OU's Thompson breaks foot in practice

NORMAN — On the first day of fall practice, Oklahoma is already down a quarterback. Sophomore Kendal Thompson suffered a right foot fracture as the Sooners opened up preseason camp in the early morning hours on Thursday.

"We're optimistic that Kendal will return early in the season," OU head coach Bob Stoops said.

Thompson, a former standout at Southmoore High School, was vying for playing time at quarterback heading into camp. He was competing against Blake Bell and Trevor Knight to be Landry Jones' replacement.

At Big 12 Media Days in Dallas, Stoops refrained from announcing the Sooners' starting quarterback. It was widely assumed that Bell would replace Jones with Thompson and Knight being featured in certain running packages.

There was not an immediate timeline for Thompson's return announced on Thursday.

"He is eager to rejoin his teammates on the field as soon as possible," Stoops said.
