OSU, TU players on watch lists

Briefs

Two Oklahoma State football players have been added to the preseason watch lists for postseason awards.

Senior defensive tackle Calving Barnett has been named to the watch lists for both the Outland Trophy and the Nagurski Trophy while senior cornerback Justin Gilbert has been named to the list for the Nagurski Trophy as well.

Barnett was previously named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award and Gilbert is also on the list for the Hornung Award.

Two University of Tulsa football players have been named to the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

Linebacker Shawn Jackson and safety Demarco Nelson are among 81 players named to the list for the award that's presented to the national defensive player of the year. The list includes 28 linemen, 27 linebackers and 26 defensive backs.

Tulsa opens the 2013 season Aug. 29 in Ohio against the Bowling Green with a 6 p.m. kickoff time scheduled.

OKC Barons assigned to AHL Western Conference

OKLAHOMA CITY — The American Hockey League has again assigned the Oklahoma City Barons to the West Division of the league's Western Conference for the 2013-14 season.

The Barons will play in the division with the Texas Stars, San Antonio Rampage, Charlotte Checkers and the Abbotsford Heat.

The Barons are a minor league team of the Edmonton Oilers and open a 38-game home schedule on Oct. 4.

1B Freeman, RHP Delabar elected to All-Star game

NEW YORK — Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman and Toronto reliever Steve Delabar have won the fan voting for the last spots in the All-Star game.

Freeman's victory means Los Angeles Dodgers sensation Yasiel Puig will not get to play in the July 16 game at Citi Field unless he is added as an injury replacement. Puig is off to a terrific start in his first stint in the majors, but he's only been up for five weeks, leading some to question whether he belongs on the NL team.

Freeman set a record with 19.7 million votes, and Puig was second.

Delabar won with 9.6 million votes. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 37 appearances for the Blue Jays.

Freeman is batting .307 with nine homers and 56 RBIs heading into Atlanta's game against Cincinnati on Thursday night.
