Wrestling regional preview capsules

Quick look at regional tournaments around the state.

(Continued)

4A east (at Glenpool)

The favorite: Vinita. The Hornets have hung tough against 5A and 6A teams in tournaments this season, and they are coming off a second-place finish at dual state. Dustin Hayes (106), Grant Martin (113), Braden Hayes (120), Kaleb Phillips (220) and JW Williams (heavyweight) led a team that will also be solid in picking up points in the overlooked consolation bracket.

Other contenders: Cascia Hall, Wagoner and Sallisaw. In quite possibly the deepest of all the regional sites, Cascia Hall will be led by Cody Lambert (106), Scout Skidgel (113), Josh Watkins (126) and Kyle Driscoll (152). Wagoner, which won Coweta tournament and Maverick Conference tournament titles this season, will counter with Travis Greer (106), Alex Lockwood (113), Brad Boswell (145), Fischer Medlin (160), Roman Rodriguez (182) and Derek Marshall (220). For Sallisaw, Cale Wilson (170) and Jadon Davenport (195) will keep the Black Diamonds in the mix.

Other wrestlers to watch: Miami's Eli Hale (126), an Oklahoma State signee, should win the regional crown and then look to improve upon his second-place showing at the state tournament last season. ... Tyler Tustin (138) of Poteau will look to repeat his regional and state titles from last year. ... Wyatt Sheets (126) and Keaton Sheets (152) will have their work cut out for them against Hale and Driscoll, respectively, but the Stilwell pair should make a push for regional titles.

4A west (at Weatherford)

The favorite: Tuttle. Until someone can derail Tuttle in 4A, the Tigers will continue to be the favorite to win everything. Tuttle is coming off yet another dual state championship, and the Tigers will be tough to beat with Blake Dauphin (113), Gunner Laffoon (132), Dakota Head (145), Austin Elam (160), Zachary Beard (170), Riley Fielder (182) and Nate Jackson (heavyweight) in the lineup.

Other contenders: Cushing and Mannford. Cushing has been chasing Tuttle all year with Daniel Hood (113) leading the way. Mason Roberts (126), Ryan Moline (145) and Daniel Rowell (160) also bolster the Tigers' lineup. For Mannford, Steven Cole (106), Kaleb Furr (120) and Luke May (182) provide a solid foundation.

Other wrestlers to watch: Raul Vasquez (120) and Tyler Sanchez (126) give Weatherford two solid candidates to qualify for the state tournament. ... Blanchard's Braden Stringer (170) could wind up in the finals against Beard. ... Harrah's Jace Curry will likely headline the group at 138.

  • Sooners shifting several positions

Experience comes from encountering the same things in the same ways over and over again. Oklahoma’s Geneo Grissom and Julian Wilson have that at defensive end and nickleback in bunches.
However, both will be seeing new things when practice begins. Grissom is moving to outside linebacker. Wilson will be getting a look at cornerback as his senior season begins

The NCAA once cracked down on colleges that went too far luring top prospects, then it targeted teams that lathered players with special treatment. That was until the NCAA's get-tough approach backfired, rendering it ineffective and creating an opportunity for those who want to play dirty.

  • Really one true champion?

I decided to spare the colleagues in front of me – and myself from making a scene – by holding back flipping my table at the Big 12 Conference Football Media Days in Dallas.
I had become exhausted by the constant use and misrepresentation by the Big 12 with their moniker of “One True Champion.” If they are going to live with the slogan, then they need to abide by that slogan.
Perhaps its a simple case that they are keeping constant with the poor math of the 10-team Big 12 Conference.
