SHS track 3rd, 4th at regional
STROUD — Sequoyah's boys track team finished third overall at a Class 3A regional meet at Stroud on Saturday. The Sequoyah girls came in fourth.
The Indians — with 63 points (nine behind first-place Kansas) — were led by Nick Kingfisher's first-place leap in the high jump, which was 6 feet even — four inches better than Prague's Aaron Guess who came in second place.
Terrance Nofire posted a pair of second-place finishes for Sequoyah in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Nofire picked up both silvers while finishing behind Chandler's Chris Lowery.
The Indians' 400-meter relay team finished third with a time of 45.87. Okmulgee (45.02) and Okemah (45.52) finished ahead of Sequoyah.
In the 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays, Sequoyah sported a pair of fourth-place finishes. The Indians, however, qualified both relay teams for the state meet.
All top-three finishes at regional meets qualify for the state meet. And other qualifiers make the state meet based on times.
The Sequoyah girls piled up 61 points and were behind Beggs (153), Okmulgee (103) and Vian (80) in the team standings.
Kayla Davis led the way for the Lady Indians, finishing first in the 400-meter dash at 1:02.17. Kelsey Leach was first in the 300-meter hurdles, and Taylor Henry was second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Sequoyah's quartet of Kelsey Linch, Leach, Davis and Sierra Polk combined to finish third in the 1,600-meter relay.
In the shotput, Brittany Poe was second for the Lady Indians. Poe also qualified for the state meet in the discus.
For Keys, the girls came in eighth place, thanks to Ali Andrews, who was second in the 3,200-meter run and third in the 1,600-meter run. Andrews was also on the 3,200-meter relay team (with Mylee Hewitt, Sierra Cox and Shauna Rucker) that came in fifth and qualified for the state meet.
For Hulbert, Tery Cook won the discus title at the 2A regional meet in Oologah.
Sequoyah and Keys will both be at the Class 3A state meet will be in Ardmore on both Friday and Saturday this week. Hulbert will compete in the 2A state meet at Carl Albert.
