Sequoyah wins one, loses one at Muskogee

MUSKOGEE — Two late surges and one fast start defined Tuesday’s three-way battle between Muskogee, Sequoyah and Oktaha at Rougherettes Park

Muskogee rallied past Sequoyah 6-5, then the Lady Indians rallied past Oktaha 10-4 before the Lady Roughers made it 2-0 on the day with an 8-0 blanking of the Lady Tigers.

Muskogee 6, Sequoyah 5

Brook Hendrickson sparked a three-run rally with her third hit in as many at bats, rallying the Class 6A No. 4 Lady Roughers from a two-run deficit in the seventh.

“Good job out of our 10 hole and when we get that, we get back around to the top of our order where we’re strong,” MHS coach Keith Coleman said of Hendrickson. “She’s been struggling so it was good to see her hit well and get us started (in the seventh).”

Hendrickson felt the sense of urgency, but did what she had done in three previous at-bats — hitting on the ground and line drives.

“In my mind it was just ‘get a base hit.’ That’s all I was thinking,” she said. “The struggle has been that in that I’ve been dropping my hands and popping up.”

Mariah Hooper broke a 3-all tie in the top of the seventh for 5A No. 9 Sequoyah with a two-run homer to left. But starting with Hendrickson’s base hit, Muskogee would come back against Hooper, whose tough day in the pitcher’s circle centered around a wicked one-hopper off the bat of Muskogee’s Jessi Venable in the first inning which caught her in the neck. After a short time out, she was able to shake it off, but in the end, not the MHS offense.

Paige Gann came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit double to cut it to 5-4, then Dee Emarthle had her first hit of the game, a single to tie the contest. With runners at the corners, Carlee Gann, who drove in the first run of the game for Muskogee, beat out a potential inning-ending double play for a game-ending fielder’s choice RBI.

Kaitlyn Kaiser singled in the other run in the first for MHS. Audrey Johnson did the same in the second. For Sequoyah, Susie Davis singled in a pair of runs as part of a three-run inning to tie matters in the fourth.

  • Sooners shifting several positions

Experience comes from encountering the same things in the same ways over and over again. Oklahoma’s Geneo Grissom and Julian Wilson have that at defensive end and nickleback in bunches.
However, both will be seeing new things when practice begins. Grissom is moving to outside linebacker. Wilson will be getting a look at cornerback as his senior season begins

The NCAA once cracked down on colleges that went too far luring top prospects, then it targeted teams that lathered players with special treatment. That was until the NCAA's get-tough approach backfired, rendering it ineffective and creating an opportunity for those who want to play dirty.

  • Really one true champion?

I decided to spare the colleagues in front of me – and myself from making a scene – by holding back flipping my table at the Big 12 Conference Football Media Days in Dallas.
I had become exhausted by the constant use and misrepresentation by the Big 12 with their moniker of “One True Champion.” If they are going to live with the slogan, then they need to abide by that slogan.
Perhaps its a simple case that they are keeping constant with the poor math of the 10-team Big 12 Conference.
