RiverHawks tie for 8th at Division I golf tournament
CALHOUN, La. – The Northeastern State men’s golf team finished in a tie for eighth after Tuesday’s final round of the 2013 ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational. The tournament was contested on the par-72 Calvert Crossing Course at Southern Pines Golf Club.
The field included 12 NCAA Division I schools, one NCAA Division II school (Northeastern State) and one NAIA school (Oklahoma City University).
NSU shot a final-round total of 309 to finish at 63-over-par 927 and tie for eighth with New Orleans. Sam Houston State won the team title at 41-over 905 after firing a 299 in the final round. UMKC took second at 908 and Oklahoma City finished third at 909.
Junior Zach Tucker led the RiverHawks after finishing in a tie for 22nd. He shot a final-round 76 to end the three-round event at 14-over 230. Senior Kyle Fouts tied for 27th at 232 after shooting a 77 Tuesday. Sophomore Jonas Granel shot 76 in the final round to tie for 35th at 234, and senior Jacob Bartel slipped to 52nd following a final-round 83. Freshman Jackson Hess was part of the team score Tuesday with an 80. He tied for 75th at 252.
Sam Houston State’s Albert Miner took home individual honors after carding a 3-over 219. He tied with Oklahoma State’s Brad Gehl and Sam Lee and beat both Cowboys in a four-hole playoff.
Next up for NSU will be the Missouri Southern Invitational April 15-16 in Joplin, Mo. The tournament will be contested at Twin Hills CC.
