Sharpshooter Courtney Jones headed to Crowder

Sequoyah sharpshooter Courtney Jones will continue her long-range assault in the Show Me State next season after signing with Crowder (Mo.) College on Wednesday.

Jones bolsters the reloading effort of a Lady Riders squad that graduates six of 11 players from a season ago, including Region 16 first-teamers Sarah Sagely and Terai Sadler.

“I just thought Crowder felt like home,” said Jones. “It was comfortable to me. I really didn’t want to go to a big school right off the bat. I wanted to go to a little school where I actually know people and get to meet people, and I really liked the coach, Tina Robbins.”

Jones’ goal is to become a physical education teacher and one day coach the game, herself.

As for now, former coach Larry Shade understands that replacing her on-court contributions will be no easy task.

“It has been my pleasure over the past three years to be associated with this player,” he said.

“We’re losing 12.9 points per game. She shot 33 percent from the three-point line. She was the tri-state MVP selection of the Jay Tournament. She was selected to the Muskogee All-Phoenix team. We’re going to miss her. Her team is going to miss her.”

Crowder, an NJCAA member school, rolled to a 29-6 overall mark in 2012-’13 en route to the second round of the NJCAA National Tournament.

“It’s exciting and I’m glad to be continuing my career playing basketball at the next level,” Jones said. “It’s been a goal and dream of mine forever.”
