Commerce blanks Hulbert, 50-0, on gridiron

TAHLEQUAH — The contest between the Hulbert Riders and the visiting Commerce Tigers got off to a fast start Friday night, with Commerce ultimately blanking the Riders, 50-0.

After an early Hulbert drive stalled, a Commerce trick play and 4-yard run by running back Trent Barr put them up 6-0.

Hulbert’s following drive was a run-run-run, three and out against a stingy Commerce defense. Commerce running back DC Chance put the Tigers up 13-0 with a 38-yard touchdown scamper.

From the jump, it was apparent one team was superior, as Commerce took a commanding lead in the first. The score was 29-0 as a result of a 50-yard fumble recover for a touchdown by Julian Arizpe, a long D.C. Chance rushing score, and a blocked punt safety.

The scoring didn’t slow for Commerce, as Trent Barr hammered in yet another touchdown, as did D.C. Chance on a sweep around the end. The Hulbert Riders’ offense did show signs of life, but two turnovers and negative plays resulted in punts and points for Commerce. Hulbert led in first downs, but to no avail, as the halftime score was 43-0.

As you could guess with 43-0 to begin the third quarter, the clock was running the entire second half. Both teams started cycling in subs, but not before another Commerce touchdown, this one a 94-yard run by D.C. Chance to put an exclamation point on the already-decided game.
