NSU tennis wins home opener over UCO

The Northeastern State women’s tennis team won its ninth straight match in a 6-3 win over Central Oklahoma Thursday afternoon in its home opener in Tahlequah.

The RiverHawks (10-1, 3-0 MIAA) swept the doubles matches and split the six singles matches with the Bronchos (5-1, 0-1 MIAA), who suffered their first loss of the season.

“Playing in front of our home crowd for the first time this season was great, and we really fed off it,” NSU coach Amanda Stone said. “Sweeping doubles was big for us. We have shown a lot of improvement in doubles since the beginning of the year.”

The bottom of the doubles lineup saw NSU take a 1-0 lead after junior Martina Bruzikova and sophomore Barbora Jirickova teamed up to defeat Laura Klingert and Ilga Racika-Racko 8-1.

The junior duo of Jeanne Mallem and Houda Bellamine overcame an early 0-3 hole to defeat Petra Pesic and Alina Gorina 8-4 from the second flight.

Senior Ivana Belejova and freshman Kristina Savchenkov completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Antonella Rossini and Rose Cabato on the top court.

Mallem and Bruzikova quickly clinched the team victory for Northeastern State with wins at No. 4and No. 5 singles, respectively. Mallem took down Cabato 6-0, 6-1, and Bruzikova defeated Klingert 6-0, 6-0.

Jirickova added to NSU’s score with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Racika-Racko on the sixth court before UCO was able to take a match.

With the RiverHawks leading 6-0, the Bronchos took the final three courts in three sets each to help the final tally.

Northeastern State will stay in Tahlequah to take on Washburn at 2 p.m. Friday for its second of three matches in three straight days.
