Q&A: Reese Davis, Tahlequah middle linebacker

Reese Davis has a soft-spoken demeanor most of the time. But his actions on the football field are demonstrative while doing his talking for him. As a sophomore, Davis piled up 125 tackles and 10 tackles for loss while anchoring Tahlequah’s defense. Look for much of the same when Tahlequah begins the 2013 season on Sept. 6 against Fort Gibson

You’re a two-sport athlete between football and wrestling. If had to pick one, which one would you choose? And why?

Football, because I can eat a little more. Plus, I’ve always kind of liked football a little more, and it’s always got a little more of a special place.

At linebacker, would you rather stop the run or be in pass coverage?

I’d rather stop the run. I’m not as fast as those receivers.

Do your eyes light up when someone is coming across the middle and a pass is just floating out there?

Oh yeah. It’s kind of a highlight.

(Tahlequah head coach Brad) Gilbert has said you’re going to play a big role on defense this year? Do you feel like that’s a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders?

I feel like it’s a responsibility, but not one that I can’t fill. Everybody has been doing it for hundreds of years — as long as football has been around — so I just have to fill in those shoes now.

In wrestling, you finished third at 138 pounds in Class 5A. What was it like being up on that podium?

It felt like a lot of hours and years in the gym actually paid off.

What, outside of football, do we not know about Reese Davis?

I like to hang out with my friends, and I enjoy working.

Where do you work at?

White’s Meat Processing. I just have to grind hamburger meat. It’s pretty easy. It doesn’t prepare me for football, but it’s good.
