SHAWNEE — Jake Johnson and Blake Berry tied for 11th overall as the Tahlequah boys golf team qualified for the Class 5A state tournament in Shawnee on Monday.
Johnson and Berry both shot a 36-hole total of 158, while Brent Spradlin (165), Hunter Pennington (170) and Brandt Emerson (174) rounded out the rest of Tahlequah’s scores.
The Tigers came in third with a 659. Bishop Kelley won at 620, and Shawnee was second with a 632.
Bishop Kelley’s Chris Karlovich won medalist honors with a 149.
At the Class 3A boys regional at Scissortail Golf Course in Claremore, the Keys boys qualified for the 3A state tournament as a team. The Cougars — Shea Heble, Kris Beres, Alex Thompson, Zach Rogers and Larry Caviness — finished sixth with a 728.
It’s the first time the Keys boys has claimed a berth in the state tournament.
Sequoyah’s Rylan Bunch and Kyle Butler also qualified for the state tournament.
Tigers to take on Memorial
Class 5A No. 18 Tahlequah (11-17) received its regional tournament assignment on Tuesday, and the Tigers will travel to Tulsa to take on No. 11 Memorial (18-13) in the first round on Thursday. The two clubs will square off at 1 p.m. while No. 12 Coweta (11-10) and Hale playing in the other first-round matchup.
The winners of the first-round games will play at 3 p.m. on Thursday, while the losers will play at 5. On Friday, the elimination game will begin at 4 p.m. with the regional championship to follow at 6. The “if-necessary” championship game will be Saturdaty at 1 p.m.
