Shinn at 3 p.m.: Big 12 packs in the plays

WOODWARD — The Big 12 Conference has gained a reputation as an offensive league because of the prodigious point totals its teams have put up. In truth, that is a misnomer.

What the conference should be known as is the league that packs the most plays into four quarters.

In 2011, games involving Big 12 teams averaged 150.5 plays from scrimmage. It was 10 more plays than the average Pac-12 team (140.2), 15 more than the average Big Ten team (135.05) and 19 more than the average SEC squad (131.2).

The difference between national champion Alabama and Oklahoma State, which finished the season ranked No. 3 in polls, was striking.

Both teams played 13 games. The Cowboys' season consisted of 2,076 snaps. The Crimson Tide: 1,585.

Going by Alabama's pace, OSU played the equivalent of 16 games last season. At OSU's pace, the Crimson Tide played 10.
