NSU softball lands 7 All-MIAA spots

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Northeastern State softball team had seven members earn All-MIAA accolades, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced Thursday.

This marked the most all-conference honors for NSU since the team picked up eight in 2007 as members of the Lone Star Conference.

Leading the selections for the RiverHawks were senior catcher Kelsi Hilderbrandt and junior shortstop Amanda Harjo. Both were selected to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Hilderbrandt earned her second-career all-conference accolade, as she was also named All-LSC North Division Honorable Mention in 2011. She leads the squad with a .381 batting average this season. She has 53 hits, eight doubles, four home runs and 29 runs batted in.

Harjo is the team leader in hits (59), doubles (12) and RBI (43). She is also second in batting average (.360) and runs scored (33).

Five members of the squad earned honorable mention accolades. Those were senior third baseman Lisa Ripperger, senior utility player Cayce Coleman, junior second baseman Megan Robison, junior outfielder Madison Reed, and freshman outfielder Saharra Henson.

Ripperger collected her third-career postseason award. She was named to the All-LSC North Division Second Team in both 2010 and ‘11. Coleman earned All-LSC Honorable Mention honors in 2010.

Ripperger has started in all 48 games and is batting .323 this season. She has recorded 43 hits, 29 runs scored, seven doubles, a team-leading three triples, five home runs, and 33 RBI. Coleman is batting .380 this season in 50 at bats. She also owns an 8-7 mark in the circle with a 4.38 earned-run average, 13 complete games and two shutouts. She leads NSU with 63 strikeouts.

Robison has played in 44 games and is batting .272. She owns a .955 fielding percentage and also has 31 hits, four home runs and 28 RBI. Reed has started all but one game and is third on the team with a .333 batting average, while leading the squad with 15 stolen bases. She also boasts a .971 fielding percentage and has 48 hits and 33 runs scored.

Henson is second on the team with six home runs. She has started all but one game and is batting .284 this season. She has not committed an error the entire year, and she is second on the team with six home runs. She also has 40 hits, 42 runs scored and 23 RBI.

NSU is set for its first action in postseason play since 2007. The team is scheduled to meet Emporia State at 2 p.m. today in the opening round of the 2013 MIAA Softball Championship in Overland Park, Kan.

  • Sooners shifting several positions

Experience comes from encountering the same things in the same ways over and over again. Oklahoma’s Geneo Grissom and Julian Wilson have that at defensive end and nickleback in bunches.
However, both will be seeing new things when practice begins. Grissom is moving to outside linebacker. Wilson will be getting a look at cornerback as his senior season begins

The NCAA once cracked down on colleges that went too far luring top prospects, then it targeted teams that lathered players with special treatment. That was until the NCAA's get-tough approach backfired, rendering it ineffective and creating an opportunity for those who want to play dirty.

  • Really one true champion?

I decided to spare the colleagues in front of me – and myself from making a scene – by holding back flipping my table at the Big 12 Conference Football Media Days in Dallas.
I had become exhausted by the constant use and misrepresentation by the Big 12 with their moniker of “One True Champion.” If they are going to live with the slogan, then they need to abide by that slogan.
Perhaps its a simple case that they are keeping constant with the poor math of the 10-team Big 12 Conference.
